Kidney update #3: We were supposed to go home the 27th, but at our last checkup on the 26th, the lab results showed the kidney had stopped filtering, and I had a "raging urinary tract infection". I was readmitted for a series of scans and possible biopsy of the new kidney. The scans did not show any blockage, so a needle biopsy was ordered. A prebiopsy scan showed the new kidney was completely surrounded by fluid, which ruled out any needle biopsy, so the surgeon was called in to reopen me and do a visual check and take a biopsy the old fashioned way. That was done on Halloween, and no blockage was noted and the biopsy showed the kidney was healthy with no signs of rejection(praise God!). The problem apparently was pressure from all the fluid surrounding the kidney. I spent 2 more days in the hospital, then was released back to the townhouse for another week with daily labs. Finally we were released to go home on Nov 10th. So we are home at long last, with staples still in and a drain attached, and were greeted with a stack of cards and notes from classmates. We will go back to Birmingham Dec 1st to remove both. I want to thank all of you for the prayers, concerns, cards and calls. There is no better feeling than the warmth of friends from 50 years ago rallying to your side in tough times. You have blessed me greatly!

Kidney update #2: Transplant occurred as scheduled on Oct 5th. Operation was flawless, without any complications. Stayed in hospital for 3 days, then moved to hospital townhouses next door. Will be here till the 27th, then home! The new kidney is working great and I feel 1000% better. Staples came out this am, and the wound is also healing nicely. We do labs every day to check kidney function and to evaluate medicine levels (take about 40 pills a day). See the doc once a week for followup. We want to thank you for all the prayers and concern you have covered us with; God is truly the Great Physican!

Update as of Sep 22, 2011: First, it was great to see all of you last year at the 50th! I don't know if you noticed, but I was quite ill at the reunion. My kidneys were failing and uremic poisoning was getting the best of me. Since then I have been on dialysis three days a week and really feel good between sessions, but the dialysis wipes me out on treatment days. Got some great news though, a friend from our church volunteered to give me a kidney! She went through the blood matching and the physical exam to see if she was a match, and praise God, she was! Transplant will be 5 October at the UAB Hospital in Birmingham, AL. I expect 5-7 days in hospital, followed by 2-3 weeks in an apartment next door to the hospital, then home. Our daughter and her husband and children just moved from Atlanta to Birmingham(another God thing), so we will have lots of support. Say a prayer for me and Susan (the donor) that all goes well.
